Why You Need A Backup Plan
It doesn’t matter what kind of devices you use, whether for business or personal, you need to have a good backup plan. At some point, that device will be damaged, lost, stolen, or just completely fail. It’s a very sinking feeling when you power up your computer and find that your hard drive has died and you have no backup. That's when you realize you had irreplaceable photos, school work, business documents or hours of music and videos on that computer and all of that information is now gone. The best backup plan is the 3-2-1 plan. That means you have 3 total copies of all your important data: one working copy that you have on your local device, one local backup copy that you have on an external drive, USB drive or NAS (Network Attached Storage) device and one offsite backup copy at a friend’s house or through a backup service like Carbonite. And NO, cloud syncing services like OneDrive, Dropbox, Google Drive or iCloud are not good backup options for offsite backups. Why? Because if you delete it on the computer, it’s deleted from them as well with no way to get the information back.
On Site Backup Options
There are many ways to do onsite backups, and all have their pros and cons. One way is to use an external hard drive or USB drive. Very inexpensive, but you have to remember to actually do the backup manually. A better way is to setup a Network Attached Storage (NAS) or use an old computer with enough hard drive space to backup all your other devices. It is more expensive upfront but once it’s setup you never have to worry about it again.
